Classic Car News: Vintage Means Value | Automotive News Magazine

Paying out for that vintage car of your dreams may leave your pockets feeling light, but in the long run you may find you have more spare cash than you thought. Modern cars depreciate in value every year, however antique or classic cars not only hold their value but also increase in value over time.

?Lots of people like new cars,? says Tim Schofield, motoring expert at auctioneers and valuers, Bonhams, ?but as soon as you drive these out of the showroom, they depreciate like a stone?. The Telegraph online reports that ploughing money into a piece of ?automotive art?, also known as a classic car, could be the ideal investment.

Finding that perfect vintage vehicle can take time, with each model looking, feeling, smelling and moving differently ? with its very own personal nostalgic value. According to the Telegraph.co.uk, ?a classic car should be a worthwhile investment thanks to the unparalleled joy and satisfaction it?s capable of delivering?.

The Telegraph online reports that some wise investments could be a 1996-99 Boxter, which can be picked up for around ?6,000 or the 1989-94 911s valued at around ?8,000. If you have the cash to splash, another investment could be a mint condition Aston Martin DB4 GT from 1962-63, which is worth a staggering million (around ?680,000). However a ?dog rough 1969-73 DBS V8 is available today for ?5,000-?10,000, while an unkempt 1994-99 DB7 is a shade under ?15,000?.The joy of owning a classic car that may not be in the best condition is that you can restore it to its original beauty or keep it preserved in its current, somewhat aged state.

Fine craftsmanship, seldom seen and utterly beautiful ? it?s not difficult to see the appeal in classic cars. If you have more money and sense, then you could choose a classic car that is worth its own weight in gold, such as the Aston Martin DB5 (the car driven by James Bond in the Sean Connery era), or the Ferrari Dino and Lamborghini Miura.

According to AssociatedContent.com, the classic car trend seems to suggest that ?classics may be one of those things that won?t get crushed under the weight of the economy?, having made it through many an economic breakdown and still coming out on top.

When taking on the venture of restoring one of the legendary metal masterpieces of the past yourself, you should make sure you don?t get caught with your pants down so to speak ? the more you know, the more you can do to restore the vehicle to its original beauty.

Tim Schofield, of Bonhams believes that ?generally speaking, if a car caused a sensation when it was first launched, then it?s always going to be collectable in years to come?.

2 Baltimore attorneys sue Facebook over privacy

(AP) ? Two Baltimore law firms have filed a lawsuit against Facebook, arguing that the site has violated privacy laws.

The Daily Record of Baltimore (http://bit.ly/xicCpO) reports the law offices of William Murphy Jr. and Peter Angelos filed their lawsuit in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif. The lawsuit, which also involves a California firm, claims Facebook has used online tracking technology to monitor users even when they are not on Facebook's site.

The two named plaintiffs in the case are Laura Maguire of Charlotte, N.C., and Baltimore resident Christopher Simon.

California-based Facebook said in a statement Wednesday that it believes the case is without merit.

Lawsuits by users of large Internet services over privacy and other grievances are fairly common and typically seek class-action status.

Former Harrisburg resident starts what could be 1st official gay and ...

Three and a half months after the military repealed its ?don?t ask, don?t tell? policy banning openly gay members, a former Harrisburg woman has started what is believed to be the first official gay support group on a military base.

Petty Officer Ann Foster started the group because her lesbian roommate at Great Lakes Naval Station near Chicago was having problems and didn?t know where to turn.

Foster, who is a lesbian, said she hopes Great Lakes Area Gay, Lesbian and Supportive Sailors, or GLASS, will fill a void with support, empowerment, advocacy and education.

?Finally, they can come to a place and feel open,? said the 25-year-old Foster, who was a photographer at The Patriot-News for a year before joining the Navy in December 2010. ?That?s been the proudest point, knowing [the group is helping] so many people.?

?I do not know of any other naval station anywhere that has anything like this,? said Capt. Peter Lintner, commanding officer of Training Support Command Great Lakes. ?I think it?s going to go viral. Their Facebook page is at 300, and it?s been up for two weeks. They?ve had responses and questions from literally all over the U.S. and as far out as Japan.?

Lintner is proud his base might be the first, he said. Other commanders want to know how to encourage GLASS chapters on their bases, he said.

Officials at the Pentagon couldn?t confirm GLASS is the first because they don?t track installation groups, a spokeswoman said.

Foster said she?s overwhelmed with emotion at the cross section of people who have responded, from those just entering the Navy to senior enlisted officers just coming out sexually. There also have been retired people who struggled their entire military careers to hide their sexual identity, she said.

She said they usually get about 25 people at their twice-monthly meetings. Through their Facebook page, they?re hearing from U.S. gays and lesbians in the military who want to charter GLASS support groups on their own bases, Foster said.

There are support groups that work independently from official military channels. OutServe is a nonprofit organization with more than 4,500 actively serving gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered military professionals from all branches of the military.

Foster said she expected a big, scary backlash when she started her group, but that didn?t happen.

?Everything?s been smooth, and people have been supportive, and if people aren?t supportive they kept their mouths shut,? she said. ?I think they realize this is the future.?

It was only a matter of time before her group or some other group stood up and made this happen, she said.

In a few weeks, Foster will go to San Diego to continue her weapons training, and she plans to work on setting up a new chapter.

She hopes other military branches will charter similar groups. ?We?ve had people in the Army and Air Force call and offer their support,? Foster said.

Petty Officer Liz Greenwood, who will take over the Great Lakes chapter when Foster leaves, said she was impressed by Foster?s courage to declare her sexuality so publicly.

?She?s an amazing person. She?s such a caring person and pretty selfless individual,? the 29-year-old Greenwood said. ?She?s definitely one of the most courageous young women I?ve met.?

This month, Foster told all 4,500 students on her base about GLASS. She said her time in the midstate helped her find that voice.

?Before I came to Harrisburg, I was very quiet, introverted. By having a job that I loved to do and having the support of my peers just made me sort of blossom into a person who would stand up for others,? she said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

?If you had told me I would be the leader of a group that could help thousands of service members, I would say you were crazy,? Foster said. ?I feel like everything I?ve done up until now has prepared me for what I?m doing now and what I can do in the future.? ?

    AT&T Galaxy Note review

It was once said that if a phone or tablet used a stylus its hardware designers had blown it. It was also said that if the software on that device contained a task manager that coders had similarly missed the mark. The Samsung Galaxy Note on AT&T contains what many would consider a stylus and, if you hold down the Home button, you're presented with what can only be described as a task manager.

So the Galaxy Note, Samsung's massive 5.3-inch "superphone," is critically flawed then, right? No. It is, in fact, one of the best phones to hit the market since another Samsung powerhouse -- the Galaxy Nexus. It's a device with a lot to love and is the kind of phone that would make almost every Android aficionado swoon. However, with its massive 5.3-inch display and generally understated styling, it isn't for everybody. We reviewed it before in European guise, but now read on to see if AT&T's $300 LTE version of this big brute is just right for you.

Arab nations get ready to arm Syria rebels

Syrian government forces attacked opponents of President Bashar al-Assad in cities and towns across the country on Tuesday and Arab officials confirmed that regional governments would be ready to arm the resistance if the bloodshed did not cease.

The western city of Homs, the heart of the uprising against Assad's 11-year-rule, suffered a bombardment of pro-opposition neighborhoods for the 11th day running. At least six people were reported killed.

Government forces clashed with Free Syrian Army recruits near the town of Aleppo, in the northwest of the country, The Guardian reported.

Residents also fled from Rankous, a rural town near the capital Damascus, as it came under government artillery fire.

Opposition activists said that the offensive continued early Wednesday as Assad's forces launched an offensive on the city of Hama, bombarding residential neighborhoods after armored reinforcements advanced to the edge of the city in the last week.

The neighborhoods of Faraya, Olailat, Bashoura and al-Hamidiya came under bombardment from armored vehicles and mobile mounted anti-aircraft guns as troops that had been amassing at an airport and an armored brigade based south of Hama assaulted the city, Syria's fourth largest, they said.

With Assad seemingly oblivious to international condemnation of his campaign to crush the revolt, Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia pushed for a new resolution at the United Nations supporting a peace plan forged at a meeting in Cairo on Sunday.

But Arab League diplomats said that arming the opposition forces was now officially an option.

A resolution passed at the meeting urged Arabs to "provide all kinds of political and material support" to the opposition.

This would allow arms transfers, they confirmed to Reuters.

"We will back the opposition financially and diplomatically in the beginning but if the killing by the regime continues, civilians must be helped to protect themselves. The resolution gives Arab states all options to protect the Syrian people," an Arab ambassador said.

The threat of military support was meant to add pressure on the Syrian leader and his Russian and Chinese allies but it also risks leading to a Libya-style conflict or sectarian civil war.

"I suspect we will see a further militarization of this conflict, with potentially quite widespread and dangerous consequences," said analyst Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Center.

UN rights chief: Syria crimes against humanity must not go unpunished

Smuggled guns are already filtering into Syria but it is not clear if Arab or other governments are behind the deliveries. Weapons and Sunni Muslim insurgents are also seeping from Iraq into Syria, Iraqi officials and arms dealers said.

Assad, whose Alawite-minority family has ruled the mainly Sunni Muslim country for 42 years, is trying to stamp out pro-democracy demonstrations and stop insurgent raids across Syria country with what U.N. officials describe as indiscriminate attacks and shoot-to-kill orders.

He dismisses his opponents as terrorists backed by enemy nations in a regional power-play and says he will introduce reforms on his own terms.

Video: Homs gets slammed by explosions in latest flare-up (on this page)

While the uprising initially involved rallies by civilians, armed insurrection by the Free Syrian Army, made up largely of army defectors, is increasingly coming into play.

Conflict flared anew on Tuesday in Rankous, near the capital Damascus. Activist Ibn Al-Kalmoun, reached by Skype from Beirut, said many residents had fled the town from government shelling.

In Homs, a strategic city on the highway between Damascus and commercial hub Aleppo, the pro-opposition neighborhood of Baba Amro was struck at dawn by the heaviest shelling in five days, the Syria Observatory for Human Rights said.

Six people were killed, it said, adding to an estimated toll of more than 400 since the assault began on February 3.

"They are hitting the same spots several consecutive times, making venturing out there impossible. The shelling was heavy in the morning and now it is one rocket every 15 minutes or so," activist Hussein Nader said by satellite phone.

"Residents are trapped. We have a man who sustained severe burns and is dying and he needs a hospital."

The man was in a truck picking up wounded people in Baba Amro overnight when it was hit by rocket fire, he said.

Photos: Syrians flee as tanks storm the city of Idlib

Mohammad al-Mohammad, a doctor at a makeshift hospital in Baba Amro, appeared in a video with a wounded youth he said was shot by a sniper in his side.

"The bullet ended up in the stomach. This is a critical condition that needs transportation to a proper hospital," Mohammad said. "We appeal to anyone with conscience to intervene to stop the massacres of Bashar al-Assad and his cohorts."

Another opposition activist, Mohammad al-Homsi, said the humanitarian situation was getting worse, with food and fuel short and prices tripling. Army roadblocks had been set up around opposition districts, Homsi said from the city.

Nader said that people in residential buildings in Baba Amro were sheltering on the ground floors.

Arab League wants UN peacekeepers in Syria

Shelling was also reported in the town of Rastan.

Foreign media have had to rely on activists' accounts of the situation because the Syrian government restricts access, although reports from neutral organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and Human Rights Watch confirm the general picture of widespread repression.

At the United Nations, diplomats said a draft General Assembly resolution, supporting the Arab League plan and calling for the appointment of a joint U.N.-Arab League envoy on Syria, could be put to a vote on Wednesday or Thursday.

The resolution, seen by Reuters, is similar to a Security Council draft vetoed by Russia and China on February 4 that condemned the Assad government and called on him to step aside.

There are no vetoes in General Assembly votes and its decisions are not legally binding.

An Arab League proposal for a joint Arab-U.N. peacekeeping mission be sent to Syria elicited a guarded response from Western powers, who are wary of becoming bogged down militarily in Syria. It was rejected out of hand by the Assad government.

Video: Activist offers insight on Syrian protests, violence (on this page)

Russia, Assad's main ally and arms supplier, also showed little enthusiasm, saying it could not support a peacekeeping mission unless both sides stopped the violence first.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in Washington that the peacekeeper proposal would be tough to get through, given Russian and Chinese support for Damascus.

"There are a lot of challenges to be discussed ... and certainly the peacekeeping request is one that will take agreement and consensus," Clinton said.

NYT: For Iraqis, aid to rebels in Syria repays a debt

The Syria conflict, the most prolonged of the revolts in the Arab world which saw the leaders of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya toppled last year, is shaping up to be a geopolitical struggle reminiscent of the Cold War.

Russia wants to retain its foothold in the region and counter U.S. influence. Assad is also allied to Iran, which is at odds with the United States, Europe and Israel.

The Arab drive against Assad is led by Sunni-ruled Gulf states, who also see Shi'ite Iran and its shadowy nuclear program as a threat.

Analysts say the conflict could spread across the Middle East's ethnic, religious and political fault lines if it is not resolved.

China tries to limit veto damage
Meanwhile, China's foreign ministry said Tuesday that a Chinese envoy, Li Huaxin, had met the head of the Arab League, Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby, to discuss Syria, as Beijing seeks to limit the diplomatic damage from its veto of the U.N. resolution.

The foreign ministry said its Li had an "extremely frank and useful" exchange with Elaraby.

China has insisted its veto did not amount to supporting Assad and was only taken to try and prevent the situation worsening.

But Elaraby has previously said that the veto had cost China and Russia diplomatic credit in the Arab world, and Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah called the veto an "unfavorable" move.

In Libya, protesters hurled rocks at the Chinese embassy.

"China and Arab countries have a very traditional friendship and cooperative relationship, and maintain close communication and coordination on political affairs," Li said, according to the Foreign Ministry statement on its website.

"Given the constantly escalating Syrian situation, the purpose of this visit to Cairo was to explain China's position and policies to the Arab League and Arab countries, and listen to their opinions," Li said.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Authorities pull iPads from Chinese stores due to obscure trademark ruling (Yahoo! News)

Chinese company Proview Technology owns the iPad trademark in the country

When you think of the?iPad, you instantly associate it with?Apple. But in China where several?fake Apple Stores have been?shuttered before, a December court ruling stated that the company didn't even own the trademark to the iPad name. Now, authorities have started confiscating authentic Apple slates from various Chinese stores, and may continue to do so in the future.

A total of 45 iPads were seized in a city near Beijing because a court determined that the product's name was owned by a company called Proview Technology. The obscure mainland China-based company filed for the iPad trademark back in the year 2000, when it first concocted its ill-fated plan to develop tablets. Proview's Taiwanese mother company sold the iPad trademark in 2010 to an Apple affiliate, but it seems that didn't include the right to use the name in the mainland.

Proview has requested for the confiscation of authentic iPads in 20 other cities across China, although it's not clear at this moment whether authorities will comply. If it happens, Apple's total sales may be affected as the country is one of its very important markets. The company's?CEO Tim Cook even called China the "very key" to its earnings in July. Right now, reports indicate that resellers in the country are pretty nervous, and some have even taken iPads off the shelves of their own accord.

(AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris)

(AP) ? Greece faces further hurdles and delays before it is to receive its second euro130 billion ($171 billion) bailout in spite of its lawmakers voting through further austerity measures in the face of violent protests.

The European Union on Monday called the Greek parliament's approval of a further round of budget cuts a "crucial step forward" but added that it would still take some time before the second bailout is delivered.

Germany's finance ministry said the country won't give its final approval for the new aid payments until early March ? after there is clarity on how well a debt relief deal with private bond holders would work and its parliament has voted on the new measures.

Pushing the new bailout back for several weeks underlines how much distrust has built up against Greece over the past two years, when many promised cuts and reforms were passed in Parliament but never actually implemented.

But it also means that Greece, its citizens and the rest of the world economy won't know for several weeks whether the country can avoid a potentially disastrous default.

Greece's political leaders scrambled over the weekend to get new far-reaching austerity measures through Parliament ahead of a meeting of the finance ministers from the 17 euro countries Wednesday. The drastic cuts debated on Sunday included axing one in five civil service jobs over the next three years and slashing the minimum wage by more than a fifth.

As Greek lawmakers voted on the new cuts, the streets of Athens and other cities were rocked by violent protests. In Athens, at least 45 buildings were burned while dozens of stores and cafes were smashed and looted.

Police arrested at least 74 people and detained a further 92, while in several cases they had to escort fire crews to burning buildings after protesters prevented access.

The euro130 billion ($179 billion) in new rescue loans are needed to prevent the country from a potentially catastrophic default next month ? a bankruptcy that could push Greece out of Europe's euro currency union, drag down other troubled eurozone countries and further roil global markets.

However, the Greek Parliament's vote hasn't brought an end to the uncertainty. Apart from some technical decisions, several key issues remain:

?It is unclear whether the new spending cuts, the debt relief deal and the new bailout will be enough to bring Greece's debt load down to 120 percent of economic output by 2020 ? the maximum its international creditors perceive as sustainable.

Several weeks ago, the EU estimated that there was still a financing gap of around euro15 billion ($20 billion) and an EU official on Monday could not say whether the gap has since decreased. There is hope that the European Central Bank, which also holds a significant amount of Greek debt can help close that gap by forgoing profits on those bonds.

?The other 16 countries that use the euro are still waiting for the leaders of Greece's two main political parties to commit in writing to implementing the new austerity measures even after elections expected for April. Both the Socialists and the center-right New Democracy party backed the package in the parliamentary vote.

?National parliaments in Germany, Finland and the Netherlands will have to vote on the second bailout package. Since those countries are traditionally most critical of bailouts, the votes are unlikely to happen before there is clarity on whether the bailout deal will actually make Greece's debt sustainable again.

Germany's insistence on taking more time to decide whether it is willing to send more bailout money to Greece means the final decision on the rescue loans will have to be split from a related deal with the country's private bondholders designed to slice some euro100 billion off Greece's debt.

The bond swap with private investors has to be launched this week so that it can be completed ahead of March 20, when Greece has to redeem some euro14.5 billion in bonds. The debt deal would see banks and other investment funds exchange their old Greek bonds for new ones with half the face value, lower interest rates and longer repayment deadlines.

The finance ministers from the other 16 countries that use the euro as their currency could give Greece the green light to make the swap offer to investors at their meeting Wednesday, which would give investors several weeks to decide whether to participate.

Before that can happen, the ministers will want to written assurances from the Greek party leaders on implementing the austerity measures as well as a clear plan for saving an extra euro325 million, the EU's Economic Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said Monday.

FILE - In this Sunday, April 30, 2006 file photo, Bruce Springsteen performs during the 2006 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans. (AP) ? It takes two men to replace The Big Man.

Bruce Springsteen announced Thursday that two musicians ? Jersey Shore sidekick Eddie Manion and Clarence Clemons' nephew Jake ? will "share the saxophone role" during the E Street Band's "Wrecking Ball" world tour, which begins March 18 in Atlanta.

The new "Wrecking Ball" album, which will be released March 6, is Springsteen's 17th, and the first since the sudden death of the E Street Band's saxophonist last summer.

The long-awaited, and much-speculated-upon, sax decision also included news that singers Cindy Mizelle and Curtis King, trombonist Clark Gayton and trumpeter Curt Ramm will tour with E Street, along with newcomer Barry Danielian on trumpet.

Jake Clemons, son of a former Marine Corps band director, began performing with his family as a child, and his career was championed by his famous uncle.

Eddie "Kingfish" Manion is a longtime saxophonist with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, a group that has cross-pollinated for decades with Springsteen and E Street. He was with the horn section during Springsteen's Tunnel of Love tour in 1988, and also played with the Seeger Sessions Band, along with Ramm and Gayton.

Manion recently told New Jersey's Star-Ledger that he had sometimes been urged to "just sound like Clarence Clemons. ... But you couldn't. Nobody could sound like that. He had a sound of his own, and that's what made him great."

The decision on how to fill the Big Man's larger-than-life role in the E Street Band was not an easy one. The personal and professional aftershocks from the devastating June 18 loss have not subsided. His sax was a pillar of the E Street sound; Clemons also was the band's spiritual center.

His comrades have struggled through the healing process, offstage and on.

Last July, E Street's Steven Van Zandt joined Southside Johnny Lyon and his Jukes for an outdoor musical tribute to Clemons in Asbury Park, N.J. Instead of a moment of silence, the mayor led the crowd in a moment of noise in the Big Man's memory. Manion poured his heart into Clemons' most famous solo, "Jungleland."

E Street's equally broken-hearted Nils Lofgren dedicated his album "Old School" to Clemons, and has included references to him in live performances of "Miss You Ray," a song originally written about Ray Charles.

The selection of a Southside stalwart for the tour doesn't come as a total surprise. Lyon recently let it slip to an interviewer that Springsteen was "stealing" some of his famously big brass section. But in interviews that followed, Van Zandt sidestepped the subject, suggesting there was no done deal yet.

In the interim, various solutions were employed to make music without the Big Man.

On July 16, making his first public performance since the loss, Springsteen appeared at an Asbury Park tribute with Clemons crony J.T. Bowen and the Sensational Soul Cruisers, singing an old E Street song "Action in the Streets" with a band that included sax players Steve Barlotta and Joey Stann.

In November, Springsteen did a concert in Pittsburgh with longtime collaborator Joe Grushecky and his Houserockers band. "We don't have horns, but we'll give this one a shot," he said before launching into an E Street show standard "Waitin' on a Sunny Day."

During Springsteen's glorious Jan. 14 Light of Day benefit performance in Asbury Park, guitars ? including those of Grushecky and Houserocker Danny Gochnour ? bridged what would have been Clemons' solo during the E Street standard "The Promised Land."

Houserocker Joffo Simmons, who had just given up his drums to E Street's Max Weinberg, pointed heavenward. Springsteen smiled and offered a shout-out: "Big Man!"

It seemed no coincidence to some when Southside showed up at that show with his new band, the Poor Fools. Springsteen joked that it was hard getting used to seeing his old friend in the new role. In yet another cross-pollination, Soozie Tyrell, a violinist, guitarist and singer who performs with E Street, played with the Poor Fools that night.

A week earlier, several sax players ? including Jake Clemons ? were featured at a touching memorial benefit in Norfolk, Va. The show was buoyed by E Street bassist Garry Tallent, Bon Jovi's Bobby Bandiera, Southside and a band fronted by the Big Man's son, Clarence Clemons III, who's known as Nick.

Jake Clemons showcased some impressive singer-songwriter skills that night. But mostly, the soon-to-be co-successor to the throne ? playing solo and amid a solid sax trio with Stann and Michael Antunes ? was awash in the moment as his horn wailed in honor of the Big Man.
