Transactors Improv Bring Love to the Stage on February 1st ...

Transactors Improv

Transactors Improv

?

Love, euphoria, love, misery, music, love, kissing, love? February brings a focus on love and ?The Love Show,? Transactors improvised exploration of the joys and sorrows of amour! This year?s edition at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro is at 8pm on February 1st. Tickets range from $7 to $14 and can be purchased at www.artscenterlive.org, at The ArtsCenter box office, or by phone at (919) 929-2787.

?The Love Show? is comprised of two acts. First is a series of scenes focusing on the theme of romantic love, specifically barriers to it. The second act is a musical version of ?Gender Bender,? a spontaneous play in which four actors (two men and two women) each play two primary characters (a man and a woman). This frequently hilarious and occasionally poignant piece may leave you confused about what gender really means.

As always, this Transactors performance, including the characters, story, music, and lyrics, is made up on the spot and based on audience suggestions. ?The Love Show? will feature guest artists including Jane Allen Wilson and pianist Glenn Mehrbach.

?Love is probably Transactors? favorite theme to explore,? says director Greg Hohn. ?The stakes are so high and I think it?s a topic that taps into a lot of deep yearning and powerful memories for most of us. Jean-Paul Sartre said, ?comedy is pain,? and so, counter-intuitively, this serious subject matter makes great fodder for comedy, as well as some more profound moments.?

??Gender Bender,? is a particularly fun and challenging form,? Hohn adds. ?The women of Transactors (the Transisters) devised this form for a show they did several years ago. Playing a main female and a main male character can be confusing and surprising. Having to sing as each of those characters only adds to the level of difficulty. It?s hard but it?s also exhilarating and it seems to thrill audiences too.?

The cast for ?the Love Show? includes regular Transactors members Anoo Brod, Greg Hohn, Steven Warnock, and Annie Zipper with Mike Beard improvising technical effects.

Show time is 8:00 p.m. General tickets are $14 in advance or $10 day-of ($12 for ArtsCenter Friends); student/senior tickets are $7 in advance or $9 day-of. The ArtsCenter is located at 300-G E. Main St. in Carrboro. Call (919) 929-2787 or visit http://artscenterlive.org/event/performance/1637 for tickets and directions.

For more information on Transactors Improv, please visit http://transactors.org or call (919) 824-0937.

Theater programs at The ArtsCenter are supported in part by Chapel Hill Restaurant Group, Giorgios Hospitality Group, The North Carolina Arts Council, The Orange County Arts Comission, and Tony Hall and Associates.

The ArtsCenter is a non-profit teaching and presenting organization founded in 1974. The largest employer of artists in Orange County, NC, it serves nearly 60,000 people annually, through classes, studios, concerts, theatre, spoken word, gallery displays, more than 80 school shows, and more. The ArtsCenter exerts a local economic impact of almost $2,900,000 which generates the equivalent of 78 full time jobs and $231,000 in state and local tax revenue.

UPS scrapped plans to grow in Europe through the acquisition of Dutch delivery company TNT Express because European regulators were getting ready to reject the $6.9 billion deal.

It would have been the largest acquisition in UPS history.

UPS had offered in March to buy TNT, Europe's second-largest delivery company, to better compete with Europe's largest, Deutsche Post's DHL. Regulators objected, saying the deal would reduce competition in the market for express delivery of small packages in Europe. UPS said Monday that it had proposed "tangible remedies," but after meeting with regulators on Jan. 11, the Atlanta company told TNT it saw no prospect of the deal being approved.

UPS CEO Scott Davis said in a statement Monday that he was "extremely disappointed" with the stance taken by regulators. Shares of United Parcel Service Inc., the world's largest package delivery company, rose 1.5 percent to $79.06 in midday trading in New York.

Analysts said UPS could still pursue smaller acquisitions and also might boost its dividend or take some other action to reward shareholders.

TNT shares plunged in Europe. Although it will receive a $265.5 million (?200 million) breakup fee from UPS, TNT faces an uncertain future on its own. The 42 percent drop in its share price wiped off nearly ?2 billion from its market value.

The European Commission, which would not comment, must publish its review of the deal by Feb. 5.

The Commission reviews major corporate mergers and acquisitions to ensure they do not hurt fair competition in the market. It has the power to block deals or to demand concessions, such as the sale of business parts, to safeguard market balance.

UPS had earmarked $5 billion in cash for the purchase of TNT. Sterne Agee analyst Jeffrey Kauffman said he expected the company to now use some of that for dividends or share buybacks. He said UPS could also pursue smaller acquisitions, especially in Asia.

Jim Corridore, equity analyst for S&P Capital IQ, said UPS can still "build a stronger network in Europe through smaller acquisitions and internal growth."

Before UPS jumped in, some analysts thought rival FedEx Corp. might make an offer for TNT, but FedEx executives said in March they had no plans to do so.

U.S. analysts don't expect FedEx to reconsider in the near-term because it's in the midst of a major restructuring of its Express air cargo service.

FedEx declined to comment. Its shares rose 70 cents to $98.10.

(AP) ? Elections to pick Iran's next president are still five months away, but that's not too early for some warning shots by the country's leadership.

The message to anyone questioning the openness of the June vote: Keep quiet.

A high-level campaign ? including blunt remarks by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ? seeks to muzzle any open dissent over the process to select the successor for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and likely usher in a new president with a far tamer political persona.

Public denunciations are nothing new against anyone straying from Iran's official script. But the unusually early pre-emptive salvos appears to reflect worries that the election campaign could offer room for rising criticism and complaints over Iran's myriad challenges, including an economy sputtering under Western-led sanctions, double-digit inflation and a national currency whose value has nosedived.

"Elections, by their nature, are an opportunity to make your voice heard," said Mustafa Alani, an analyst at the Gulf Research Center based in Geneva. "Iran's leaders understand this very well and are not likely to take any chances."

And Iranian authorities hold nearly all the cards. Their main goal this time is to avoid any repeat of 2009, when reform-leaning candidates were allowed on the ballot and led an unprecedented street revolt after Ahmadinejad's re-election to his second, and final, term amid claims of vote rigging.

The protest leaders are now under house arrest and their opposition Green Movement has been systematically dismantled through crackdowns and intimidation. The next group of presidential hopefuls ? who must be cleared by Iran's ruling clerics ? is almost certain to have no wildcards.

Instead, the emphasis is likely to be on easing the domestic political friction as Iran attempts the strategic version of a win-win: Finding ways to ride out sanctions, while negotiating a deal with the U.S. and allies that would allow Tehran to keep some levels of uranium enrichment, the centerpiece of its nuclear program.

The West and others fear Iran's ability to make nuclear fuel could eventually lead to warhead-grade material. Iran claims it only seeks reactors for energy production and medical applications. Iran is scheduled to hold talks with envoys from the U.N. nuclear agency later this week.

For more than a year, internal political spats have been an unwelcome distraction for Iran's ruling system.

Ahmadinejad shattered protocol by openly defying the all-powerful Supreme Leader Khamenei over a Cabinet choice. What followed was a feud that left Ahmadinejad politically weakened and many of his allies sidelined or jailed. It also raised major doubts about whether his chief protege, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, will be allowed on the June 14 ballot.

A more likely scenario ? at the moment, at least ? is more predictable loyalists to both the ruling system and its guardians, the powerful Revolutionary Guard. Perceived front-runners include former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati, prominent lawmaker Gholam Ali Haddad Adel, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and ex-Revolutionary Guard commander Mohsen Rezaei.

But it will be months before any kind of race begins. In the meantime, Iranian authorities appear ready to pounce hard on any perceived opposition.

What has touched a nerve has been debates among reformists and moderates, including former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, about whether Iran will hold "free elections" ? a coded phrase pointing to the expected rejection of any potential opposition candidates.

Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters in Iran, responded sharply. He equated the phrase with aiding the Islamic Republic's "enemies" ? meaning the U.S., Israel and others ? that have raised questions about the fairness of Iran's elections. Iranian leaders also are concerned about a possible low turnout if former Green Movement backers stage a boycott.

"Even those who may make general recommendations about the election out of good will for the nation must be cautious not to help the enemy's purpose," Khamenei told a crowd in Tehran last week. "Be careful that your words don't discourage people from the elections."

Meir Javedanfar, an Iranian-born political analyst based in Israel, said the Arab Spring uprisings ? including the rebellion against Iran's key ally Bashar Assad in Syria ? are likely to keep Iranian authorities on high alert for any signs of unrest as the election draws closer.

"When the supreme leader looks at these developments, it would be understandable for him to be concerned," Javedanfar said.

In a rare common message, Friday prayer leaders around Iran described the phrase "free elections" as a new buzzword to create "sedition" in the upcoming vote. Hardliners call opposition leaders "seditionists."

"Those promoting the term of 'free elections' are politically defeated ones. Others who raise this term are monarchists, the U.S. and Israel ... shame on you. Why do you repeat the words of the enemy?" said Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, addressing Friday prayers at Tehran University. Jannati heads the Guardian Council, which vets election candidates.

In the seminary city of Qom, prayer leader Mohammadi Saeedi called the term "free elections" an effort "to create riots in the upcoming elections."

"We steadfastly declare that people, having put the 2009 sedition behind, won't allow the enemy and seditionists to create riots in the elections," he said.

Mohammad Shahcheraghi, leading prayers in Semnan, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) east of Tehran, urged authorities to stamp out the "second sedition."

"From today, anyone ... who promotes the term free elections should be considered an opponent of the position of the supreme leader and has served the ominous aims of the enemy," he said.

Tehran-based political analyst Davoud Hermidas Bavand interpreted the attacks as an attempt to keep Rafsanjani and others from trying to build a new pro-reform movement around the vote.

"The slogan of 'free elections' casts doubt on the authenticity of previous elections," he said. "That makes the establishment unhappy and authorities take it as an indication that reformists are seeking to provoke tensions ahead of the vote."

Japan PM says BOJ must set 2 pct medium-term inflation goal

TOKYO Jan 13 (Reuters) ? Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the
Bank of Japan (BOJ) must set a 2 percent inflation target and
make it a medium-term, not long-term, goal to show markets it
was determined to pursue bold monetary easing to end nearly two
decades of deflation.

The government is negotiating with the BOJ to issue a joint
statement this month to make the central bank accountable for
achieving 2 percent inflation, double its current price goal.

?The BOJ basically says it sees 1 percent inflation as a
loose goal. That doesn?t show it?s responsible to achieve it and
doesn?t show its strong determination,? Abe said told public
broadcaster NHK on Sunday.

?The statement must say clearly that 2 percent is the
target. That would lead to fundamental changes? in the way it
guides policy, he said.

The BOJ set its current 1 percent inflation target last
February and eased monetary policy five times in 2012.

Japan is stuck in its fourth recession since 2000 and its
export-reliant economy is suffering from a strong yen.

Abe, who won a landslide election last December, has piled
pressure on the BOJ for bolder efforts to beat deflation,
threatening to revise a law guaranteeing its independence on
monetary policy if his demands are not met.

Under intense pressure, the central bank will consider
easing monetary policy at its rate review on Jan. 21-22 and
respond to Abe?s calls to double its inflation target, sources
have told Reuters.

In the joint statement likely to be released on Jan. 22, the
BOJ wants to describe the new target as a long-term goal without
setting a specific deadline, to leave itself flexibility in
guiding future monetary policy.

Abe, however, warned that making 2 percent inflation a
?long-term goal? wasn?t good enough. ?That?s too long. It should
be a medium-term one. Otherwise markets won?t react,? he said.

The Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy, the government?s
top economic panel which the BOJ governor attends regularly,
could call a meeting to focus on monetary policy and a
timeframe, Abe said.

Abe also said he will meet with monetary policy experts on
Tuesday, including his special economic adviser Koichi Hamada,
to seek views on who would be suitable as next BOJ governor.

?Basically, I?d like to choose someone who can implement
bold monetary policy and who shares our views,? he said.

Abe?s government has the power to nominate a successor to
BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa when his term expires in April,
although the nomination needs approval by both houses of
parliament. Abe controls the lower house but the upper house.

Japan last week approved a $117 bln stimulus package, the
biggest spending boost since the financial crisis, to try and
boost the economy. Abe is gambling that a shift to a more
expansionary fiscal policy and more monetary easing from the
central bank can end years of stop-start growth.

Court revives call for BP oil spill pollutant list

A federal appeals court has revived an environmental group's lawsuit to make BP PLC list the amount and type of every pollutant that got into the Gulf of Mexico during the 2010 oil spill.

But it upheld a judge's decision that the rest of the Center for Biological Diversity's lawsuit became legally irrelevant when BP capped the well.

The spill began in April 2010 after an explosion aboard the rig Deepwater Horizon, which had been leased by BP and had been working at the company's Macondo well site about 50 miles southeast of the Louisiana coast. The rig sank two days later.

At estimated 200 million gallons of crude oil flowed out of the well before it was capped in July. The oil fouled coastal marshes and beaches and caused seafood harvest grounds to be closed periodically.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' three-judge panel took issue with BP's contention that the pollution information was already readily available on the Internet, satisfying the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act.

"Some of the Web pages cited in the defendants' briefs lead to links to documents comprising thousands of pages of information," Judge Carolyn Dineen King wrote in a footnote to the opinion joined by Chief Judge Carl E. Stewart and Judge Priscella R. Owen. "We do not think that the intent of EPCRA is met by requiring the public to search for a needle in a cyberspace haystack."

BP had no comment on the opinion, which was filed Wednesday.

"It's great that BP could be forced to disclose the amounts and toxic components of everything that spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. This public disclosure is important for the restoration of the area and for public health," Miyoko Sakashita, oceans director for the center, wrote in an email Wednesday.

"While the decision on the public disclosure of the spill is a victory, we're disappointed that the Clean Water Act claims have been dismissed," she continued. "The lessons from the BP spill seem far from over, and there have been recent questions about discharges and oil sheens near the site. So we are considering our options for the dismissed claims."

Officials have said that underwater inspections at the site of BP's Deepwater Horizon rig disaster have failed to identify the source of a persistent sheen on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico - but the well and relief wells drilled to stop the gusher are secure. Lab tests were planned on a white cloudy substance, not believed to be oil, that appears to be coming from several areas on the overturned rig, officials said in mid-December.

The District Court ruled correctly that there were no continuing claims under the Clean Water Act and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act because the well had been killed under federal orders and supervision, the 5th Circuit ruled.

"By all accounts in the record before us, the well site is now effectively dead. This is not the typical case where defendants may claim repentance and reform through voluntary action only to revert to their old ways upon dismissal of the suit," King wrote.

The ambitious exercises, which will involve ships from all four major Russian fleets, are a sign of growing confidence on the part of Russia's military as it begins to enjoy the benefits of President Vladimir Putin's huge budget allocations for renewing and reequipping all branches of the armed forces.

The purpose of the war games will be to strengthen integration between different types of forces and gain practice with major military deployments outside Russia's immediate neighborhood, the Defense Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

As part of the maneuvers, naval ships will arrive at an "unprepared" coast in the Russian northern Caucasus region to take amphibious troops onto transport vessels.

"The primary goal of the exercise is to train issues regarding formation of a battle group consisting of troops of different branches outside of the Russian Federation, planning its deployment and managing a coordinated action of a joint Navy group in accordance with a common plan," the ministry's statement said.

The participating ships, it said, will be drawn from all of Russia's four major naval formations: the Northern, Baltic, Pacific, and Black Sea fleets.

Some experts suggest the war games may be cover for an increasingly nervous Moscow's preparations to evacuate Russian citizens and their dependents from war-torn Syria.

About 9,000 Russians are registered with the Russian Embassy in Damascus, but some experts say the full number may be 30,000 or more. Over the nearly half a century that Moscow has enjoyed good relations with Syria, thousands of Russian women have married Syrian men and moved to the country. Many of them may urgently demand to return with their children to Russia if the situation turns critical.

This week the Russian Navy refreshed a fleet, including several huge amphibious assault ships capable of carrying thousands of people, which it had deployed to the eastern Mediterranean last summer.

Experts say the replacement fleet dispatched this week is of similar makeup, with at least five huge troop-transport ships at its core.

As part of Russia's eight-year, $659 billion rearmament program, the Navy is slated to receive 50 new warships by 2016, including new Borey-class nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarines ? a third of which entered service last weekend ? 18 major surface warships, and dozens of special purpose and support vessels.

Repurpose an Old Door Into a Corner Shelving Unit

Repurpose an Old Door Into a Corner Shelving UnitOlder solid-core wooden doors have a lot of character and it can be difficult to just toss them away if you're remodeling or come across one cheaply at a building thrift store. Better Homes and Gardens has a great tutorial on how you can transform that door into a useful and attractive corner shelving unit.

What you basically need to do is mark the center point of the door, drawing a vertical line along that point, and cutting the door in half vertically. Sand the cut edges and pre-drill pilot holes to join the two sides together with timber screws. For the shelves you'll want to cut out quarter-circles and pre-drill and screw those shelves into the door. Now you just need to decide if you're going to paint or refinish the door.

One safety concern to keep in mind if you attempt this project is that many older doors may have been painted with lead-based colors?if you're unsure wear a respirator to avoid breathing in potential lead particles while cutting, sanding, and refinishing. See the source link below for precise measurements and additional photos.

Looking for love in the new year? - Digital Life - TODAY.com

Rosa Golijan / NBC News

By Rosa Golijan

Those looking for love online better focus right now?? statistics suggest that the time period between Christmas and Valentine's Day is when romance flourishes online.

According to data provided to TODAY.com by Match.com, the dating site typically sees a 25 to 30 percent increase in new members registrations between Dec. 26 and Feb. 14. During this time, other activities ??such as searches and on-site communications ??occur at a higher rate as well.

Match.com's highest activity peak in the last year, a 55 percent increase in registrations, occurred on Jan. 2, 2012, close to that of its UK-based counterpart with the same name. (That site's annual peek?occurred?just before 9 p.m. local time on Jan. 1, according to UK-based publication Daily Mail, and led some to suggest that this is the very best moment in the entire year to seek out a partner.)

The idea that people are looking for love in the chilly winter months crammed between two holidays is backed up by data compiled by Facebook. Trends in relationship status changes in 2010 and 2011 show that some of the biggest net increases in new relationships (based on users changing their relationship status fields from "non-coupled" (meaning "single" or "divorced," for example) to "coupled" (such as "married" or "in a relationship") occurred on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Feb. 14, and Feb. 15.?These days saw from 22 to 49 percent more new relationships than break-ups.

The romantic times aside, love doesn't seem to conquer all. According to Facebook, the most common relationship status change in 2012 was to "single." The social network found that 40.5 percent of relationship status fields went from coupled to "single" over the last year. (Keep in mind that this change can include folks who previously had a blank relationship status and finally got around to filling out the field.) On the bright side, 29.2 percent of profiles updated to ?"in a relationship," 8.2 percent to "engaged," 7.2 percent to "married," and 7.5 percent were toggled to a blank.

What we can take away from all these details is that we are not alone in being alone (or lonely)? There are plenty of fish in the sea all year long ??but January, in particular, may give you a bigger selection than usual.

Michigan Northwestern Basketball: Burke, Hardaway Lead Wolverines Past Wildcats, 94-66

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Trey Burke scored 23 points, Tim Hardaway Jr. added 21 and No. 2 Michigan pounded Northwestern 94-66 on Thursday night to remain unbeaten.

Off to their best start since they opened the 1985-86 season with 16 wins, the Wolverines (14-0, 1-0) had no trouble in the Big Ten opener after breezing through the non-conference portion of their schedule.

They built a 21-point halftime lead with Burke and Hardaway Jr. leading the way and were never challenged by Northwestern (9-5, 0-1).

Michigan shot 59.6 percent overall and made 13 of 22 3-point attempts with the two guards doing most of the damage. Burke shot 9 of 16 overall and hit 4 of 6 3-pointers. Hardaway was 6 of 8 from the field and 4 of 5 from long range, and the ankle injury that kept him out of the previous game didn't seem to be an issue.

Jordan Morgan added 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Wolverines, while Glenn Robinson III and Nik Stauskas scored 10 points apiece.

Jared Swopshire and Kale Abrahamson each scored 11 points for Northwestern, but the Wildcats gave up the most points they have allowed this season while being outclassed by one of the nation's best teams.

It was a sharp contrast from their two meetings last season, when Michigan needed overtime to win both games.

This time, the Wolverines ended the suspense early.

Burke, averaging a team-leading 17.8 points coming in, scored 15 in the first half. Hardaway added 12 points, hitting all four 3s, and Michigan barely broke a sweat before taking a 51-30 halftime lead.

Burke did his best to bury Northwestern almost as soon as the game started.

The sophomore guard scored 13 straight points for Michigan to help the Wolverines grab a 20-4 lead.

Hardaway got going midway through the half, making consecutive 3-pointers that made it 33-13 and drew an "M Go Blue! M Go Blue!" chant from the maize-and-blue contingent in the stands.

He struck again from the outside on consecutive possessions later in the half. And Burke wowed the crowd in the closing minutes when he laid the ball in after a nasty crossover.

For Northwestern fans, there was little to cheer in the early going other than when football coach Pat Fitzgerald addressed the crowd on the heels of his team's Gator Bowl victory.

Rainfall, brain infection linked in sub-Saharan Africa

Jan. 4, 2013 ? The amount of rainfall affects the number of infant infections leading to hydrocephalus in Uganda, according to a team of researchers who are the first to demonstrate that these brain infections are linked to climate.

Hydrocephalus -- literally "water on the brain" -- is characterized by the build-up of the fluid that is normally within and surrounding the brain, leading to brain swelling. The swelling will cause brain damage or death if not treated. Even if treated, there is only a one-third chance of a child maintaining a normal life after post-infectious hydrocephalus develops, and that chance is dependent on whether the child has received the best treatment possible.

"The most common need for a child to require neurosurgery around the world is hydrocephalus," said Steven J. Schiff, the Brush Chair Professor of Engineering, director of the Penn State Center for Neural Engineering and a team member.

In sub-Saharan Africa, upward of 100,000 cases of post-infectious hydrocephalus a year are estimated to occur. The majority of these cases occur after a newborn has suffered from neonatal sepsis, a blood infection that occurs within the first four weeks of life, the researchers reported in a recent issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics.

Benjamin C. Warf, associate professor of neurosurgery, Harvard Medical School, Boston Children's Hospital, noticed that about three or four months after an infant in East Africa had an infection like neonatal sepsis, the child would often return to the clinic with a rapidly growing head -- hydrocephalus. Schiff joined Warf to help figure out what caused this disease so frequently.

Schiff and colleagues tracked 696 hydrocephalus cases in Ugandan infants between the years 2000 and 2005. The researchers obtained localized rainfall data for the same time frame through NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather satellites using the African Rainfall Estimation Algorithm developed at the U.S. NOAA Climate Prediction Center.

Uganda has two peak rainfall seasons, in spring and fall. By comparing the data from NOAA and the hydrocephalus cases, the researchers found that instances of the disorder rose significantly at four different times throughout the year -- before and after the peak of each rainy season, when the amount of rainfall was at intermediate levels. In Uganda an intermediate rainfall is about 6 inches of rain per month.

Schiff and colleagues previously noted that different bacteria appear associated with post-infectious hydrocephalus at different seasons of the year. While the researchers have not yet characterized the full spectrum of bacteria causing hydrocephalus in so many infants, they note that environmental conditions affect conditions supporting bacterial growth, and that the amount of rain can quench bacterial infections. The moisture level clearly affects the number of cases of hydrocephalus in this region of East Africa.

"Hydrocephalus is the first major neurosurgical condition linked to climate," said Schiff, who is also professor of neurosurgery, engineering science and mechanics, and physics, and a faculty member of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences. "This means that a substantial component of these cases are almost certainly driven from the environmental conditions, and that means they are potentially preventable if we understand the routes and mechanisms of infection better."

Other members of the research team were Sylvia L. Ranjeva, who was then a Penn State Schreyer Honors College undergraduate and now at the University of Chicago Medical School, and Timothy D. Sauer, professor of mathematics, George Mason University.

The Penn State Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute; the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Commonwealth Universal Research Enhancement (CURE) Program; and the Harvey F. Brush Endowment funds supported this work.

Stocks surge after last-minute budget deal reached

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are opening sharply higher on Wall Street after lawmakers averted sweeping cuts in government spending and with a last-minute budget deal.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 232 points to 13,336 shortly after the opening bell Tuesday, the first trading day of 2013. That's a gain of 1.8 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index shot up 29 points, or 2 percent, to 1,455. The Nasdaq composite rose 82 points, or 2.7 percent, to 3,102.

Investors have been keeping a close eye on the budget stalemate in Washington and were relieved that a deal was reached. However the late-night budget agreement leaves many issues unresolved and it remained unclear how long the market rally would last. Next up is a fight over the government's borrowing limit.

NY county: Releasing gun names endangers public

NEW YORK (AP) ? A New York county clerk justified his refusal to release the names and addresses of handgun permit holders to a newspaper, saying it would give stalkers and thieves a convenient roadmap to target potential victims ? and determine whether they have a gun.

"This certainly puts my public in danger," Putnam County Clerk Dennis Sant said Thursday following a news conference in which he was backed by the county executive and other elected officials.

The Journal News, which serves New York City's northern suburbs, sparked an outcry last month when it published clickable online maps with the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in Rockland and Westchester counties.

When the newspaper requested the same information from Putnam, Sant initially said the county needed more time to fulfill the request. Sant balked entirely this week, saying the law gives him the prerogative to refuse to release public information if it endangers the public. Judges and police officers could be targeted by the people they put behind bars, he said. People with orders of protection have expressed concern to him about would-be attackers finding them through the database.

While anyone can come into his office and file the necessary paperwork to request information on individual permits, Sant said the difference is that the Journal News plans to publish the information in a way that makes it accessible to everyone, instantaneously.

"First of all, it tells criminals who doesn't have a gun," he said. "It gives a burglar or it gives a thief a map."

The Journal News' database and accompanying story, "The Gun Owner Next Door," was published as part of the newspaper's coverage following the Newtown, Conn., school shooting. Some readers say it unfairly stigmatized gun owners, branding them in the same way as online maps showing where child molesters live. The newspaper says it received threats and has posted armed guards at its offices.

Journal News Publisher Janet Hasson did not respond to several requests for comment Thursday but has issued statements previously standing behind the newspaper's project and maintaining residents have a right to see such public information.

Diane Kennedy, president of the New York News Publishers Association, said she reached out to Hasson offering support. She said editors may debate whether the Journal News should have published the database, but they fully backed the newspaper's right to access public records under New York's Freedom of Information Law. If the issue went to court, she said, member newspapers would file a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the Journal News.

"It's really clear cut," Kennedy said. "The existing law doesn't have exemptions in it. It says this information is subject to FOIL."

Rex Smith, editor of the Times Union in Albany, N.Y., said : "There is a broad consensus that the kind of resistance to the FOIL application that we're seeing in Putnam County is intolerable."

The denial of similar information to The Wall Street Journal by New York City's police commissioner led to a case that in 1981 was decided in favor of the newspaper.

But Sant says that times have changed.

"The technology today is so different," he said. "I'm looking forward to the opportunity of bringing to the magistrates that this is not 30 years ago."

Several attempts to pass a law that would shield gun permit holders' personal information have failed to pass the legislature in recent years.

Experts say the county may have a difficult time defending the refusal, because New York state law classifies the data as public.

"The argument has been made and rejected," said Robert Freeman of the State Committee on Open Government. "There's never been any indication that disclosure resulted in any jeopardy."

Edward S. Rudofsky, a New York attorney who specializes in the First Amendment, added, "I don't see why technology makes this any more or less sensitive than it would otherwise be."

How to Save Money with Heating and Air in Sacramento

As a home owner, it is vital to find every possible way of cutting corners on spending. These tough economic times have touched all of us. Saving money is not only a nice thing to do, it is a necessity.

If your heating and air conditioning system is more than 10 years old, it?s time to get it replaced. Newer, energy-efficient models are available now. These save you a large amount by reducing energy costs. But there?s more you can do to avoid huge energy costs month after month.

Five Benefits of an Energy-Efficient Home

Although you may start out by making a small investment to have an energy-efficient home, it is well worth it. Of course, putting some money into a new HVAC system will lower your future utility bills and save you money on repairs and maintenance. But any actions you do to proof your home against energy loss will help.

Here are five key benefits of having an energy-efficient home:

1. Better indoor air quality air

2. Health improvements

3. Comfortable environment

4. Increased market value of your home

5. Fewer emissions

The Best Equipment to Buy When Shopping for Heating and Air Units

When it?s time to get your new heating and air unit, you should shop for the Energy Star-rated equipment. This rating means that these units are designed especially for effective operation as well as energy efficiency.

When you get the most efficient operation, you are doing more than just reducing energy bills. You are also protecting your family?s health and the environment.

How to Improve Your Home?s Energy Efficiency

Even if you aren?t going to replace your HVAC system quite yet, you can still take action to improve your home?s efficiency.

Here is how:

? Seal the windows or install double-paned windows

? Test the air ducts and repair or replace any that are problematic

? Insulate the attic or upgrade the insulation already there

? Fully seal the attic

? Get regular maintenance done on your HVAC system

This last point is probably the easiest to handle. When the heating and AC unit in your home is in disrepair, poorly working parts can damage other parts, requiring costly repairs and resulting in poor operation. Catching these things early can save quite a bit of money.

Don?t wait for winter months to set up professional heater repair in Sacramento, as HVAC experts can find those things that can go wrong and do minor repairs to get them running perfectly once again. As triple-digit summer temperatures loom, finding exceptional air conditioner repair in Sacramento is an easy solution so you won?t be left without AC during horribly hot days.

Energy efficient homes provide you with great monetary savings and avoid possible health issues for your family. Never neglect your home?s energy efficiency!

Social Networking & Online Community Management Tips

Online Community BuildingWe live in a world where shopping, dating, watching new films and networking can all be done online.? In fact, these actions (and many more) have become a part of our everyday life.? Many of us may experience buyers remorse for purchasing something online that wasn?t within budget, a desire to post a bad review after a terrible movie, or have a sense of regret after a bad date.

When it comes to networking for personal and more importantly business use, there are many benefits to be had and pitfalls to be avoided.? If you are able to effectively engage your online community you can experience many advantages including:

  • An introduction to someone such as a thought leader you might not otherwise have access to.
  • Connecting with other business professionals in your field.
  • Discussions and research which can further your insight into your prospects and customers.

These benefits only scratch the surface.? We know that the initial connection is just the beginning.? It begs many of us to ask what it really takes to grow and maintain an online community in a meaningful way.? This post provides 3 helpful tips for effectively growing and managing your online community.

Tip #1 ? Rome Wasn?t Built In A Day

Patience is a key when you are initially growing your online network and even as you manage it on an ongoing basis.? Perhaps you reached out to a well respected individual or organization on Twitter and obsessively check your new followers every hour hoping to see their handle on your list.

When ?networking up? you may want to take a more strategic approach.? Spend time doing research, try to see if there are connections that you may have in common, or a mutual interest or goal that connects you in some way.? Even in the online world, people want to connect with people they like.

Keep in mind that meaningful connections on social networks are worth much more than a large list filled with inactive accounts or illegitimate profiles.

Tip #2 ? If You Want to Make Friends, Be Friendly

Before Google and MapQuest applications were invented for smartphones, one thing all of us have done at one point was ask someone for directions.? If you were lost which person would have a bigger impact on you:

  • Person #1 ? Took a quick moment to tell you that your destination was a couple blocks away.
  • Person #2 ? Spent a couple minutes showing you where to go and drew you a simple map to help guide your way.

I?m sure we can all agree that the person that spent just a few extra minutes doing what they could to help you reach your goal would have left the better impression.

How does this translate to your online community?? Very simply, a little bit can go a long way.? On a consistent basis you may want to:

  • Use search terms within Facebook & Twitter related to your areas of expertise and find questions you could help answer.
  • Visit LinkedIn groups to participate in the conversation as well as ask and answer questions.
  • Monitor and respond to comments on your company blog and social sites daily.
  • Identify at least 2-3 web articles per day to comment on.

Tip #3 ? Give the People What They Want

In order to give your community content that they will devour, you must first determine what it is that they want.? This can be accomplished through a combination of tactics such as speaking with your current clients to determine what they would find interesting and monitoring your competitors and prospective clients to see what type of interaction seems to work best for them.

As a rule, your content should be a good mix of:

  • Current and relevant industry news that will be helpful to your prospects and customers.
  • Informative information about your organization in a way that does not appear to be a sales pitch.
  • Questions based on your customer pain points that you have identified.
  • Mini social campaigns based around a theme to draw in your online audience.

An well thought out and genuine social networking strategy can be an effective means of helping to attract, engage, and convert prospects into customers and make meaningful connections.

As marketers I?m curious to know what is the biggest benefit that you?ve seen from nurturing your online community?? What do you think is your biggest opportunity for improvement?

Catherine McKenzie: 52 Pick Up: A Year of Reading Bestsellers -- Part I

I have a confession to make: I am not a popular reader. What do I mean by that? I mean, quite simply, that I am rarely reading what everyone else is. I frequently look at best-sellers lists and find that not only have I not read any of the books on it, I haven't even heard of most of them. And that's not because I'm reading Proust or Aristotle (though I did read the latter in college; Proust eludes me). In all other aspects of my life, I am very much of my time. I've seen every episode of Girls, Homeland and The Wire. I watch a lot of movies. I know who most of the performers are at the Grammy's.

I tweet.

So why is my book reading so out of synch? I honestly have no idea, but this year, I read several best-sellers that I thoroughly enjoyed: The Night Circus, Defending Jacob, Gone Girl. And from this, an idea was born: What if I spent a whole year only reading best-sellers? What if I was always reading what was the most popular at that exact moment? Would I be constantly reading things I hated or would I mostly be reading gems?

See, I have this theory I apply to music. If a song makes it into the top 40, there's a reason. It's not just collective bad taste. If you're honest with yourself, I think you'll agree that these songs usually have something catchy and infections about them. There the songs you catch yourself singing when you're unawares. That you know all the lyrics to though you don't know how. Maybe they're not going to change your life, musically speaking, but they're worth knowing. And sometimes they're brilliant, too. Sometimes there's a nexus between great leaps forward and popularity.

And also: I read the Harry Potter books because everyone was talking about them. Ditto The Hunger Games series. I love those books, and have read them more than once. (And yes, I read the Twilight books, too, but, honestly, I want those hours of my life back. Don't even ask about Fifty Shades of Grey.)

Anywho, no theory is perfect. But I think I'll do it anyway. At least I'm going to try. Fifty-two weeks, 52 best-sellers. I'll use the New York Times best-seller list, and read the book that sits atop the combined e-book and print list. If I've read that book, I'll go to the hardcover list and so on. I'm a bit nervous, to be honest, because I don't usually like letting other people choose what I read. But Gone Girl is sitting at the top of list this week, a book that I am, coincidentally, re-reading. This seems like a good sign.

So here I go. Check back next week for my review, and take the journey with me, if you like. Hopefully we'll discover some great reads, together.

Happy New Year, and happy reading.
