Sarkozy meets Israeli soldier held hostage 5 years (AP)

PARIS ? An Israeli-French soldier who was held hostage for five years by Palestinian militants met Wednesday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Gilad Schalit has maintained a low profile since his release from captivity in Gaza in October in exchange for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners.

But he made an unusual public appearance Wednesday, meeting with Sarkozy in his presidential palace in Paris. Schalit did not speak to reporters afterward, but left the palace with a smile, bundled against a winter cold snap. His parents were also at the meeting.

"We are very moved," his father, Noam Schalit, said afterward. He thanked Sarkozy for his commitment to obtaining the soldier's release.

Sarkozy praised Gilad Schalit for his "exemplary courage" and his parents for "their determination and their dignity in the face of the ordeal and the anguish," according to a statement from the president's office.

At an annual dinner later held by the French Jewish community, Sarkozy castigated Schalit's captors.

"Shame ... on those who did that," he said, adding that "no idea, no ideology, no situation can justify what was done to Gilad Schalit."

Hamas-allied militants captured Schalit in a 2006 cross-border raid, and his plight captured Israel's attention for years.

Sarkozy praised Israel for its own dogged efforts to return one of its sons, calling it a mark of Israel's democracy "because in a democracy we attach importance to one life" and "every family in Israel knows he can have a Gilad Schalit."

He then advised Israel to file a complaint for the recent death of a young girl hit by a car driven by two French tourists who fled to France and cannot be extradited. The family of Lee Zeitouni, or the state, can file the complaint and the two French men could be tried in a French court.

"I call for justice," Sarkozy said.

Retirement Planning | Retirement Planning

Insurance offers a very attractive option of buying an insurance called Annuity that pay us a regular sum of money monthly/yearly from age 60 or 62 till our last day with our loved ones. You can invest a lump sum of money into annuity and the insurance company will compute the regular payout. And when unfortunate event happen to you, and the payout you received so far is less than the amount that you have invested in the annuity, the insurer will return the remaining amount with some interest to your beneficiary. However, if you outlive the amount invested, it is a blessing as you will be paid for life. Hence, by investing in annuity, we have no worry of not receiving consistent income for life. Moreover, some annuity declare bonus every year, hence your payout will increase each year to compensate for the inflation. So you get income increment even during your retirement years!

This annuity is really a necessary investment for everyone of us, whether you are single or married.

CPF board will automatically create a CPF Retirement Account once we reach 55 years old. The minimum sum required to be set aside will be deposited into the CPF Retirement Account. CPF will then start the payout from the official retirement age of 62. The payout ends once the full amount is withdrawn.

You may use CPF Retirement Fund to purchase the annuity. For those who cannot resist the attractive interest rate paid by CPF board, you may leave the money in CPF retirement fund to earn the guaranteed 4% interest. However, it is still prudent to use cash to buy a separate annuity policy so that you will still get some payout from the annuity when CPF stops the payment to you.

Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) is a scheme to help the high-income earner to save tax by contributing any amount up to a maximum cap of $11,475 into the SRS account. It also helps to build up your retirement fund. The amount contributed to SRS will be deducted from your assessable income. This works out to be a savings about $1000 if you invest the maximum amount allowed. The capital gain for investing the SRS sum is not taxable. You will be able to withdraw the SRS money from age 62 onwards, the official retirement age when you open the SRS account at any local Singapore bank. And only the 50% of the amount withdrawn are subjected to income tax if the assessable income is above $24k. So you can plan and spread out the withdrawal amount for the next 10 years to minimize the chargeable income tax.

Amount deposited into SRS account can be used to invest anything such as share, unit trust, insurance policy and even fixed deposit. Just don?t leave the money in the SRS account as it only gives the meager % of interest rate offers by the bank.

Twins take bids on Kim-and-Kris-autographed ball

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? The Minnesota Twins are cutting ties with the Kardashians, too.

Well, sort of.

The team announced Tuesday it will auction off a baseball autographed by reality starlet Kim Kardashian and her ex-husband Kris Humphries. They signed the ball before a Twins game last July, when the Minnesota native and NBA player Humphries threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

After a highly publicized wedding last August, the celebrity couple's marriage ended 72 days later when Kardashian filed for divorce. Humphries played basketball at Hopkins High School and the University of Minnesota before turning pro. He's currently with the New Jersey Nets.

The auction proceeds will go to the team's charity arm, the Minnesota Twins Community Fund.

Online bidding ends on Valentine's Day.

Daily Kos: Heart of Darkness

The completely mind-blowing story ?A Mortgage Tornado Warning, Unheeded,? by Gretchen Morgenson in the Feb. 4 New York Times, along with a ProPublica story a couple of weeks back on how Freddie Mac had placed multibillion dollar bets for years that paid off if homeowners stayed trapped in bad mortgages, are major reminders of the need to conduct full-scale investigations of the fraud perpetrated by big financial institutions. It?s a Jupiter-sized reminder of the need to staff up the new financial fraud task force, take the road blocks to effective investigations down, and be wary of a soft settlement on robo-signing. ?

Beyond those more immediate issues, though, is a far more fundamental reminder about the nature of power. When a company, and an industry, become too powerful (either in the marketplace, in the political world, or both), corruption is inevitable. The big players start to believe they can act with impunity, that they can intimidate people and break the law at will, and it will never come back to hurt them. They always assume that because of their power, they will never be caught or called out for bad behavior, and that if they are, there are plenty of ways to avoid pain: public relations people to make the bad behavior sound not so bad, lobbyists to help them change inconvenient laws, pliant regulators who will look the other way or change the rules for them, minor fines with no admission of guilt (almost always paid for by stockholders instead of the guilty party) if worse comes to worse, and bailouts by the Federal Reserve or taxpayers if the whole financial system goes down.

What we have learned with the banking meltdown is once this kind of corruption takes root in a company or a small set of companies, it keeps growing and growing until it infects not just the corporation or corporations involved, but, as in the financial system?s case in the last decade, the entire industry. In any honest book that has been done in the past four years on what happened, and there have been plenty of them, you get exactly the same story: a system utterly corrupted and out of control. The good risk managers were fired or demoted, on-target analysis (like the internal Fannie Mae legal memo Morgenson cites in her piece) was ignored, the traders trying to stay on the straight and narrow were marginalized. Everyone who raised red flags about what was going on ? and there were actually plenty of them ? were cast aside and laughed at. The entire culture of the industry became so deeply warped that at least in some ways, some of these companies started to operate as though fraud ? multiplied several different ways ? was built into the business model. ?

One of the foundational cornerstone ideas this country was based on was the idea of pluralism ? that distributed power, checks and balances, were essential to building a democratic republic. A lot of the conventional wisdom on that fundamental idea, though was overly focused on distributed power in the workings of government alone. But founders like Madison, Jay, and Jefferson were not thinking only about government when they wrote about pluralism. They knew that if any one private interest, any one section of the country, any one business or industry, became too big and powerful, it would warp everything else. If the plantation owners of Virginia, the merchants of Boston, the Anglican Church leadership, the sea-going trading industry, or the bankers in New York got too powerful and dominated everyone else, our democracy would become warped and twisted up, and we would be in a world of trouble.

Not in everything, but definitely in this, the founders were right. The financial industry got too powerful, and they assumed and operated as if they were above the law. And the rest of us paid a huge price, and are paying it still. Not all bankers are bad people, but the system itself became corrupted by too much power, and when the system itself is rotten, the good people will be driven out, or will become worse themselves. That is why, for the sake of all of us including the bankers themselves (for I do worry about their souls), the system needs to be disinfected: the bankers that egregiously broke the law need to go to jail (making that financial fraud task force the president appointed incredibly important), and the big banks desperately need to be broken up into smaller companies that are not too big to fail.

Here?s the thing, though, because I admit I tend to have become very focused on banking since Wall Street took down our economy: it?s not just banking. Read this incredibly important and truly scary article by Barry Lynn in Harper?s. Growing monopoly or oligopoly power in industry after industry is killing off small businesses, entrepreneurialism, competition, and our democracy itself. Massive conglomerates are buying up or destroying their competitors, and using their power to dictate terms to everyone else. And for way too long our government has been passively letting it happen, or even encouraging it to happen: anti-trust laws are weakly enforced, small businesses are allowed to go out business in massive numbers, unions are broken, new technologies are not allowed on the market. Once the competition, and any check on industry power, is destroyed and one or just a few companies dominate a market so completely, corruption can?t help but set in. When a company or industry has that much power, sooner or later it is inevitable that it will be abused.

Ironically, this is one area where progressives and most of the business community ? all those small businesses desperately trying to stay alive in the face of industry concentration ? should be in absolute alignment. Progressives believe in a true, vibrant free-market economy, where competition flourishes, entrepreneurs innovate, and consumers have plenty of different choices. From the 1930s to the 1970s, this country encouraged that kind of competition, and partly as a result, this country, especially our middle class, was the most prosperous the world has ever seen.

Too much power creates a heart of darkness, whether for an individual or a corporation. We need to restore a country where true competition and distributed power flourish.

The Meaning regarding Fatherhood | Buzzzzy

Everyone has a father, or perhaps at least a male parent. Becoming a male parent might happen by accident or perhaps incident, but it takes effort to become a father. Author Kent Nerburn has said: It is actually much easier being a father than to become one. Bill Cosby humorously speaks from the difficulties regarding to become a modern father, saying: In case your new American father feels bewildered as well as even defeated, let him take comfort by the fact which whatever he does positioned in any fathering situation has a fifty percent potential for to become right.Of course positioned in some times, as well as positioned in some cultures, the particular role from the father has been one mostly regarding engendering, perhaps with a modicum regarding group protection. There has always, though, been a certain expectation regarding supplying for your mother and also the children. Our early hunter-gatherer ancestors likely had a straightforward model for fatherhood: Protect, Provide, Survive. As every person?s role is really a straightforward society would be limited as well as well defined, the particular father would teach, at least by example, hunting, fishing, straightforward tool making as well as use, as well as perhaps instill a sense regarding obligation in order to protect the particular group about the fire by the threat beyond the particular reach from the firelight. As we humans settled down as well as developed specialties as well as acquired skills, it became incumbent around the father in order to teach his sons the particular trade these people would pursue, and also in order to give for all the particular family, as well as protect as well. When family life revolved about the farm, mill, or perhaps shop, this was relatively simple. The son was presently there, as well as saw what his father did each day. As we moved directly into the particular industrial age, things changed. Although role from the father was still in order to give, the particular coaching part moved in order to school, since the father?s job was likely to become positioned in a factory or perhaps other work site, where the particular family could not be present. At home, the particular father was still expected in order to give a role model, service positioned in difficult situations, as well as a strong stabilizing influence positioned in general. Within the particular computer or perhaps electronic age, we no longer expect in order to follow our fathers positioned in their own work, or perhaps at least most regarding us carry out not. Personal preference, skills assessment, as well as access in order to education determine our future roles a lot more than our father?s career does.As is actually the particular case with mothers, fathers are usually considered to become the particular person which raised, taught, as well as provided for a child, regardless regarding parentage. If adopted, or perhaps for any other reason raised by a male other than the particular male parent, which supportive male usually becomes the particular father in order to the particular child, positioned in all but DNA. It has been demonstrated which children raised positioned in families with a strong paternal presence show less behavioral problems as well as better development, compared in order to those raised without fathers. Fatherhood is actually a major role now, as usually. Even though it is actually possible now for your female parent in order to raise a child, supplying all their own physical needs, as well as earning as good an income as a male could give, when possible, the particular family still works greatest when a father figure is actually part from the group.

Marika Holmgren: The Dichotomy of Cancer: The Good, the Bad and ...

Five years.

It's the milestone. It's the "Hell yeah!" date. I think you're supposed to have a party. And yet, it's also sort of arbitrary when you're talking about breast cancer. After all, I'm only slightly less likely to have a cancer recurrence after five years than I was before five years out.

Today I mark five years from the date of my cancer diagnosis at age 37. I was driving home when I got the call, and it's a damn miracle I didn't drive off the road. Which would have been terribly ironic, I suppose.

Would I go back and undo that fateful call?

Yes.

And no.

The dichotomy of cancer is very real. Some of the happiest people I know are those that have been through a cancer diagnosis. And yet, I know an equal number of people who have passed away from the disease, far too young, far too full of life.

I've never, ever liked the term, "lost the battle." Really? You think suffering chemotherapy, surgeries, hormone therapy, and godknowswhatelse means anything less than you fought the battle of your life? How dare we say that someone "lost" what was never theirs to win when errant cells are going to do what they're going to do, no matter what sort of artillery -- chemical, natural, Eastern, Western -- you throw at them.

How dare we say that my mother, who passed away peacefully, gracefully, and quietly, after five years up against the disease, came up short at all?

But the language of cancer is decidedly complex. Even now, I struggle to bring my friends and family up to speed on the "lingo." I hate that I know it as well as I do. I hate that this is the subject for which I'm becoming best known. I'm the unwilling resident expert on all things grave and deadly.

There is a sort of instant heroism that comes with surviving cancer. I hear it frequently. How brave I am, how much of an inspiration I am. Frankly, after having endured the hell that is diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, I don't correct people. I'll take it. I had to give up my hair, my breasts, my body, my fertility, my sense of invincibility. Go ahead and call me brave. And yet. I truly don't feel I've done anything that any of you wouldn't do. What is the alternative, after all?

Five years later, and as I saw it in their eyes when I first got diagnosed, I see it people's eyes now. "That means you're all clear, right?" There is a deep need to be okay with it all, to move past it, to get back to the business of living.

I wish I knew. It many ways, it would certainly make life easier. Some days the uncertainty is so unbearable that I almost will the bad news to arrive so I can be done and over with it once and for all. So I can stop fretting over it, and so the black cloud will stop looming over me and those who love me. For in between praising me for surviving, I see their fear that I won't.

But of course, that's not what I want at all. I just want to be back where I was five years ago, when my worst fear was that I would gain 10 pounds, or that I would not get that contract, or that I wouldn't have a good first date.

Now, little things give me huge pleasure. Having a warm, comfortable home and a solid roof over my head, living close to San Francisco, one of the most exciting cities in the world, having crazy wonderful, funny, and lively friends. he meaningful work I do as a event producer for non-profit organizations that inspire and move me past the thoughts of my own mortality.

I'm certain I took all of this for granted at one point. I'm certain because I remember wishing for more. I remember that despite all I had, I spent time thinking about what I didn't have. No husband, no children. This felt like a void, the missing link. The fact that I had just enough each month to pay all my bills and to do some fun stuff, but not enough to meaningfully save for retirement. Now, I marvel that I have enough to pay all my bills, and to do some fun stuff each month. Even living near San Francisco had me complaining at times. The traffic, the cost of living, the weather. Now those gripes seems so quaint. (And yet truth be told, I do curse the cost of living now and then).

There are so many bad things that accompany a cancer diagnosis. You know what most of those are. I don't even need to list them.

But what's so strange about receiving a diagnosis of a grave illness is how much brilliance it can shine on your life. For me, it was almost immediate. Maybe because I had lost my father to two cancers -- melanoma and lymphoma -- in 1997. My brother had suffered a life-changing brain tumor 12 years before my diagnosis, when he was just 29. My mother was battling two cancers -- lung and brain -- when I received my own diagnosis. She died just 15 months after I was diagnosed.

Sometimes this lust for life overtakes me so much that I can't help but want to scream, shout, stomp my feet, and holler: "Listen to this song! Look at this picture! How amazing are we!" It's overwhelming at times -- feeling like you need to ingest life lest the plate get taken away from you too quickly. Before you're done. Before you've had your fill. I almost feel silly, loving it all so much. Sometimes it's truly painful, in that amazing beautiful way that a really fantastic movie moves you to your core. It's almost too good to handle. That's how I feel about life. I want to wear it, eat it, smell it, share it.

Thank you, cancer. I love you.

And I hate you.
